Local employee representatives are involved in discussions between Group management, employees, and local HR departments. Within the individual countries, relationships are structured in accordance with national laws, collective wage agreements, and company agreements. Our compliance processes ensure that agreements are also upheld. Our Corporate Board of Management or the local management team communicate fundamental changes to employees at all our sites in a timely manner. Within this, we strive to inform employees as early as possible via a number of communication channels, especially the intranet, video and telephone conferencing, notice boards, employee magazines, and other employee media.

In Germany, the decision-making process is subject to co-determination if fundamental changes are made to the company. Implementation of the measures that have been taken is supported by the respective locations’ Works Councils.

In the 2015/16 fiscal year, several of our apprentices completed an Energy Scout training course at the Chamber of Industry and Commerce IHK Ostwürttemberg. Immediately following that, they were able to put theory into practice when examining the supply of media, leaks, and other energy-related topics at three Voith Paper workshops.

Apprentices in a range of occupational groups and at different years of their apprenticeships at Voith Hydro also gained practical experience. Together with experts from Voith Hydro, they worked on a StreamDiver turbine for a small hydroelectric power plant. In the current fiscal year, this turbine will enter operation whereby it will utilize the hydropower of the River Brenz at our Heidenheim premises to generate electricity.

Lost Day Rate: The impact of occupational accidents and diseases, which can be measured against the time the affected employee failed to appear for work. The rate is calculated by comparing the total number of lost days with the total number of hours which the workforce ought to have worked in the reporting period.

Working Days Lost: Working days which could not be worked on (and so are “lost”) as one or more employees was/were unable to perform his/her/their usual work owing to an occupational accident or disease. These days do not count as working days lost if an employee returns for a limited number of hours or for a different activity.

          Ergonomic and safe working environment

The pilot measure in Heidenheim ran for nine months: At the 75 events held, 968 employees took part and were informed and advised on questions relating to ergonomics on a one-to-one basis directly at their workplaces. The feedback was so positive that we now plan to offer this event at other locations.

In the production area, in the reporting year the information continued to focus on dealing with heavy components and loads. In this context, the three Group Divisions involved in machine and plant manufacturing launched the pilot project Fit to Manufacture ("Fit in der Fertigung"), with four events and 36 participants. The experiences gained from this project were incorporated in the campaign on ergonomics in the workshop areas that we will run in the current fiscal year.

Furthermore, Voith employees at our Heidenheim, Crailsheim, and Garching locations had the chance during the reporting year to participate in the Siemens-Betriebskrankenkasse (SBK) company health insurance fund campaign Taking a Stance ("Zeigen Sie Haltung"), and do some back exercises using an online back trainer to maintain a healthy back while at their PC.

A further campaign in the 2015/16 fiscal year was devoted to emergency management. 1,588 participants in Heidenheim and Mergelstätten took up the opportunity to learn more in 1.5-hour seminars about key initial emergency measures, and practice using a fire extinguisher and an automated external defibrillator (AED). The training courses were developed by Voith occupational health physicians and occupational safety experts, and run by external service providers. The campaign has already proven worthwhile, with an improvement in conduct in emergency situations, particularly in relation to the standard of emergency calls and the provision of first aid.

          Health promotion and illness prevention

The presentations were a huge hit, with an average of 120 employees taking part in the events. The life-balance presentation was repeated in Heidenheim because of the huge turnout, and was also offered in Crailsheim.

Besides the series of lectures, in the 2016/17 fiscal year we plan to run a colon cancer screening campaign at several German locations.

Support in the event of illness and stress

As part of our Voith 150+ success program, occupational medical care at our location in Heidenheim was expanded to cover our locations of Crailsheim and Garching. We also decided to hire one further doctor for our occupational medicine team to cover additional locations in the east, south, and west of Germany. With this model we intend to ensure we offer a consistently high level of care across Germany, while utilizing synergy effects for instance by transferring our campaigns and initiatives from Heidenheim to other German locations. This includes the use of the same occupational medicine software across all German locations in future.

          Corporate culture and leadership

In the reporting year we conducted 10 seminars, which attracted around 110 participants in total. In addition, we are planning further events at a number of locations in Germany.
