One Step Ahead:
DIWA Efficiency Package for Citybuses

In anticipation of the forthcoming Euro-6 norm, Voith will be presenting a new efficiency package for citybuses at the UITP World Congress 2013. At the heart of the package is the new DIWA.6 transmission, which meets the requirements of the Euro-6 norm and already runs successfully in the first vehicles. The key benefit of the package for operators: lower fuel consumption, fewer emissions and higher availability.
Adapted to Euro-6 engines: the DIWA.6 automatic Transmission
The DIWA efficiency package consists of three components, which increase the efficiency of the driveline quite significantly. The basis is the new DIWA.6 automatic transmission. This is added by the topography-dependent gear-shifting program SensoTop for quick and precise selection of optimum gear-shifting points. The efficiency package can be supplemented with an optional DIWA SmartNet telemetric system that permanently monitors the condition of the transmission. As a result, downtimes are reduced and availability is increased.

Compared with its predecessor model, DIWA.6 saves up to five percent extra fuel. This is made possible by the need-based reduction of the operating pressure and an intelligent start-up management system that avoids vehicle starts against the active service brake. With the optimized Automatic Neutral Shift (ANS), the transmission can stay decoupled from the engine for longer - once again saving fuel.

The first Euro-6 series vehicles with DIWA.6 have just entered service. Since the introduction of the Euro-6 Citaro in May 2012, ESWE in Wiesbaden have been running three Citaro articulated buses fitted with Euro-6 OM 470 diesel engines (265 kW) and DIWA.6 transmissions. To date, the vehicles have completed about 130,000 trouble-free kilometers. The bus drivers' verdict on the driving characteristics of the new Citaro and the gear-shifting quality of the Voith automatic is positive.

Compared to the previous vehicles - Citaro articulated buses meeting the EEV exhaust norm, fitted with OM 457 hLA engines rated at 260 kW and Voith DIWA.5 automatic transmissions - the overall fuel consumption has dropped by about four percent.

The telemetric system DIWA SmartNet is another valuable aid to saving costs. The DIWA SmartNet system transmits the vehicle operating data periodically to an internet server via mobile radio. Any irregularities can thus be identified at an early stage. Failures are reported automatically via SMS or email. This allows preventive maintenance, results in reduced downtimes and makes unscheduled vehicle standstills a thing of the past.

With the new Voith efficiency package, citybuses use less fuel, spend less time in the workshop and therefore more time on the road.
