Voith Engineering Services to showcase lightweight design projects at InnoTrans 2014

From 23 to 26 September 2014 Voith Engineering Services will be at InnoTrans in Berlin, the leading international trade fair for transport technology - innovative components, vehicles and systems. As well as lightweight design and innovation projects, the company will also present its range of services in rail vehicle development.
Under the banner “Connecting Forces, Driving Innovation”, Voith Engineering Services will provide information about the various stages involved in the development of rail vehicles at Stand 220 in Hall 1.2. On behalf of its clients, the company prepares the design, develops a suitable vehicle concept including all components and modules (electrical equipment, TCMS, measurement systems, energy storage technology etc.) and optimizes them to series-production readiness. The company’s services include the planning of the subsequent production facility and providing support with commissioning, so that it is able to provide an end-to-end development service for rail vehicles ranging from trams to high-speed trains.

In addition, Voith Engineering Services and its partner the Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology (IWU) will also present their ‘Blue Train’ project at Stand 200 in Hall 7.2b at the Innovation Center for European Rail Technology (IZBE). This lightweight design and production concept reduces the weight of a high-speed train by up to 30 percent, by using aluminum foam in a sandwich construction method. A diverse range of lightweight materials, such as carbon fiber, are currently being tested in production in the automobile and aerospace sectors. In rail vehicle development, lightweight design methods are also gaining in significance, with a view to responsible use of resources and energy-efficient production. Engineers from Voith and Fraunhofer have developed a cost-effective solution that nevertheless meets the stringent requirements for strength and thermal resistance. Moreover, the new construction method can save up to 60 percent of tooling costs.

At a third venue, Stand 601 in Hall 23, Voith Engineering Services will join with Anlagen und Gerätebau GmbH (AGG) to provide insights into the patented Boogie Measurement System (BMS) for rail vehicles, specifically the newly developed variant BMS 1.3 for heavy rail vehicles. The pressure load comes from below and allows for very compact construction. As a result the test rig is highly flexible and costs less to use than a stationary test facility.
