High speed in calendering

Supercalenders are multi-nip calenders that are always installed offline. They are designed for high speeds and consist of an unwind section, a stand for support of the roll stack, and a reel section.

There are usually 9 to 12 rolls in supercalenders, alternating between hard and elastic rolls. When the number of rolls is even, a so-called change-over nip formed by two elastic rolls is required.

The elastic rolls are paper rollers. They consist of a continuous steel shaft on which there is a multitude of circular blanks made of special paper. These circular blanks are compressed under high pressure and locked using lock nuts.

Steel rolls or chilled iron rolls are used as hard rolls. The top and bottom rolls are usually deflection compensation/setting rolls.

Supercalenders are used in calendering and are especially suitable at high speed ranges.
