Sludge recycling technology demonstrably saves CO2

In May 2012, TÜV SÜD, a leading technical service organization, examined the “Carbon Footprint of CTC Technology” study by Voith: The result documents the ecological advantages of CTC technology with which energy and minerals are obtained from deinking sludge. Voith’s study meets all requirements of ISO 14040/14044 and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
CTC is a Voith technology which generates bioenergy. With “Controlled Thermal Conversion” paper sludge is converted into thermal energy and valuable minerals. Paper sludge is created as a waste product when paper is manufactured from recycled paper. More than 25 million metric tons of this sludge accumulates annually worldwide. This patented process reduces both the cost-intensive disposal of residual material as well as the use of fossil fuels for generating energy in the paper mill, as steam or electricity is obtained during the process. The technology is also successful in practice, having already been used for several years in a large facility.

With the CTC process, combustion takes place in a fluidized bed reactor and at an exactly controlled combustion temperature. During the process, the water contained in the sludge is evaporated, organic fractions are incinerated and the minerals contained are converted into a mixture of calcium carbonate, free lime and metakaolin. Depending on the composition, the mineral can be used as a hydraulic binder or pozzolan in the construction material sector without further post-treatment.

TÜV SÜD is a leading technical service corporation catering to the industry, mobility and certification segments. More than 17,000 employees at over 800 locations in Europe, America, Asia and Africa help to optimize technology, systems and know-how. The global Carbon Management Service department provides audits on carbon footprints, climate neutrality, renewable energy, emissions trading and on the sustainability of biofuels.

Voith Paper is a division of the Voith Group and the leading partner to and pioneer in the paper industry. Through constant innovations, Voith Paper is optimizing the paper manufacturing process, focusing on developing resource-saving products to reduce the use of energy, water, and fibers.

Voith sets standards in the markets energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials and transportation & automotive. Founded in 1867, Voith employs almost 40,000 people, generates € 5.6 billion in sales, operates in about 50 countries around the world and is today one of the biggest family-owned companies in Europe.
