Keep Your Promises.
Scharfenberg Couplers. Always Safe and Reliable Connections.
With their balanced parallelogram of forces, they guarantee a high level of comfort while requiring little maintenance. The maintenance requirement is low, even under severe conditions.
Our couplers are ideally matched to their application, always providing safe and reliable connections. They permit automatic and simultaneous coupling of mechanical, pneumatic and electrical components.
They even allow coupling of vehicles with different coupling types or heights.
Products and Applications
The Type 10 Scharfenberg coupler is used in many national railways around the world, even in high-speed applications. This coupler is characterized by its especially high-strength and a large gathering range laterally and vertically. This coupler has been the standard on high-speed trains since 2002 and has now been incorporated into the TSI Standards. The Type 10 can transmit a buff load of 1,500 kN and a draft load of 1,000 kN.
The Type 35 is especially well-suited for vehicles without a compressed-air system. On these fully electrified vehicles, the coupler can transmit a buff load of 1,300 kN and a draft load of up to 850 kN. The Type 35 is used primarily in light rail and tram, metro and regional transportation applications.
The Type 330 is used primarily in light rail and tram applications. It is small yet strong. Locating the electrical coupling underneath at the head is also possible. The coupler can transmit a buff load of 800 kN and a draft load of up to 600 kN.
Its especially compact and lightweight construction makes the Type 430/530 Scharfenberg coupler the ideal type of coupler for low-floor trams and monorails. As a folding coupler, it also fits behind front covers. It can transmit compressive and tensile forces of up to 300 kN.
The Type 55 Scharfenberg coupler has proven its flexibility and reliability in shunting applications for decades. It has been designed specifically for high loads in rough environments. Our coupler permits safe shunting and automatic assembly of trainsets. This means fewer accidents. An additional benefit - it is very easy to service and requires minimal maintenance.
The Type 140 Scharfenberg coupler has proven its flexibility and reliability in the industrial sector for decades. It has been designed specifically for high loads in rough environments. Our coupler permits safe shunting and automatic assembly of trainsets. This means fewer accidents. An additional benefit - it is very easy to service and requires minimal maintenance.

Modular adapter couplers
The new, modular adapter coupler separates the different components into two separate heads and an adapter that forms the step. The two separate heads can also be connected to one another directly. This makes it possible to combine coupler heads of any kind and at different heights easily into an adapter coupler.
CFRP adapter coupler
When towing is necessary or when shunting, adapter couplers are often mounted on the train for a short period of time by the operating personnel. For this reason, they should be light yet still withstand the high operating loads encountered when towing entire trains.
SA3 Coupler with Energy Absorption
SA3 couplers are the perfect example of all freight couplers. SA3 coupler heads are extremely robust and designed for heavy load applications, like those in coals or iron ore transportation.
Voith has developed an advanced, modular type of the SA3 coupler head. The coupler can be perfectly adapted to customer requirements and combined with Voith energy absorption systems. Furthermore, automation features can be integrated.
AAR couplers are the standard for railcars in the American market. They transmit large mechanical forces and couple automatically.
The operating principle of the automatic Wedgelock coupler is based on mechanical wedging of the coupler locks. During mechanical coupling, the coupler hooks engage automatically. They are then locked in position upon pneumatic actuation of the wedges by the vehicle operator.
The operating principle of the automatic Tomlinson coupler is similar to that of the Wedgelock coupler. During coupling, the hooks on the two coupler heads engage one another and are held in position by springs.
The Type GF automatic coupler is very common in Belgium and Switzerland. During coupling, the conical elements engage their their funnel-shaped counterparts in the mating coupler and are locked in place. The couplers can be provided with air and electrical couplings and transmit a buff load of 1,500 kN and a draft load of 1,000 kN in the standard design.
Albert couplers are used primarily on vehicles that are coupled only infrequently. The connection is made by means of pins. The coupler's drawbar can be provided with a folding knuckle (joint) which allows the uncoupled drawbar to be folded under the car.
