Working principle of anti-climbing couplers

 
The EN15227 has developed to become state of the art in the European train manufacturing industry and gets an increasingly statutory character. This standard claims the use of protective measures reducing the potential for overriding in the event of a collision.

For the first time in metro history, this function can be assumed by the couplers.

The Inspiro metro in Warsaw has been equipped with Voith Turbo Scharfenberg couplers featuring overriding protection. Both the semi-permanent couplers and the semi-automatic intermediate couplers are fitted with a patented anti-climbing type 2 rubber cushion drawgear articulation.
In contrast to conventional systems, this one starts working before the cars get to overriding. It represents a further milestone in the development of centre buffer couplers as safety-relevant train components.

When two trains collide, the cars tend to produce a vertical offset. Before this happens, the design and layout of longitudinal forces of the anti-climbing coupler produces a counter torque preventing just this.

Thus the coupler takes an active role in stabilising the train.
