Dr. Münch, why Voith has decided to set up the new Division?

Voith has always been committed to actively shaping change in our industry. If this is to continue, we have to align ourselves fully with the megatrend of digitalization. As one of the decisive players, we want to bundle our forces to promote and coin the digital revolution in engineering. The establishment of Voith Digital Solutions (DS) has been a major milestone to achieve this. With the Group Division we will develop digital solutions for existing as well as for new costumers, will create new sales opportunities and will enter new markets.

How does plant engineering fit in with Industrie 4.0 and what are the benefits for our customers?

The intelligent networking of industrial systems and manufacturing plants is based first and foremost on cutting-edge information and communications technology. So the contribution made by IT to our value chains – and those of our customers – will steadily increase. We are keen to pursue both directions, by supplying our customers with more intelligent systems, and of course by using those systems in our own business. This is why we will be expanding and enhancing our IT competencies. Of course, engineering will still be the company's core competency. Designing and building world-class equipment and plant engineering for our customers remains at the heart of our business, but we will be linking this to a more integrated product portfolio involving automation, sensor technology and data analysis.

Can you name examples of products in the area of digital development we’re already offering to our customers?

We already provide digital products and services for our customers. Every one of our Group Divisions already has a number of market-ready automation products that will form the basis of future Industrie 4.0 solutions. However, in order to be able to react with greater speed and effectiveness and make better use of synergies and by doing so to even better promote the development of new solutions, it is now the task of the new Digital Solutions management team to bring together existing competencies and skills within Voith Digital Solutions.

Why should a customer choose Voith?

Our profound industry knowledge is the key here. Our unique knowledge of industrial production processes and the required manufacturing facilities give us a major competitive advantage – for example, compared to classic IT companies, who will increasingly become our competitors.
