Paper grades

Paper: as varied as life

Paper is a fascinating material: In former times paper production was called “the white art”. With only few technical aids paper was molded by hand from rags made of cotton, linen and flax. Until today the individual working steps have hardly changed. But with the construction of the first paper machine in 1799 the industrial revolution began in the white art.

Paper accompanies us daily, whether it’s during our morning reading, when paying at the supermarket check-out or while packing gifts. Without paper, the world as we know it today would be utterly unthinkable.

The multitude of paper grades is so great it can hardly be surveyed. Each one makes special demands of the paper machine on which it is manufactured. Thermal paper for sales receipts or boarding passes, for example, has to be produced with a special thermo-sensitive layer. Production of bank notes requires various security features such as water marks, holograms or fluorescent patterns. And due to their crêped surface, hygienic products such as toilet paper, facial tissue and paper napkins have to be produced on special tissue machines.

Voith knows the demands that the various paper grades make of a paper machine and supplies both individual components as well as the entire machine for their production. Thanks to our know-how, we are in a position to react quickly and flexibly to changes in the paper industry, for example, if a new security feature on bank notes is introduced or if packaging materials are to be made more stable. For many years together with our customers, we have been successfully developing solutions that meet the increasing demands for paper products and are at the same time both ecological and economically efficient.
