Galea Crash Concept. Maximum Energy Adsorption in All Cases.

For passenger trains up to 200 km/h, we have developed a crash concept that satisfies all safety requirements despite being considerably lighter than its predecessor.
Energy absorption has been built into the structure of the vehicle head. The head is made mostly from composite fiber materials. A concept that combines light weight, high security and a variable design.

The reduced weight of the vehicle head offers several advantages. The axle loads and wear on the train and track are minimized.. This also results in reduced CO2 emission. We replace the earlier heavy steel constructions with a lightweight structure, made preferably from fiber composite. In this process, we take particular care to ensure that all requirements regarding collision safety (EN 15227), fire protection (EN 45545) and noise and heat insulation are met. The complete head module also contains a multistage crash concept with energy absorption elements that can be replaced in the event of a collision.

Safety plays a major role in rail traffic, with ever increasing importance. To meet these high demands, the Galea integrates a multiple-stage crash concept. It was designed to cover the main aspects of the EN 15227 standard, when integrated into a trainset. Crashworthiness and fire protection, as well as noise protection and thermal insulation were taken into account. What stands out: Even the crash elements are made from GFRP. The Galea was developed for Intercity trains up to 200 km / h.

Galea Vehicle Head

Modular

Just like every other Scharfenberg product, the Galea has been designed in a modular way. The entire vehicle head is characterised by short mounting times, and – when damaged – can be easily replaced. The same applies to the individual energy absorbing components. This way, train down times are minimised. The entire vehicle head will be delivered ready for installation. Apart from pre-installed pneumatic and electric components, it contains the interior panelling and driver’s desk (according to European drivers desk specifications).

Lightweight Design Using Fibre Composite Materials

Lightweight

The heavy-weight steel constructions in operation to date were replaced by lightweight structures using fibre composite materials. The weight reduction results in a higher economic efficiency and environmental acceptability. The load on every wheel is minimised, thus reducing the wear of train and tracks or respectively allowing an increased passenger volume.

Flexibly Adaptable Crash Structure

Flexible

The base of the Galea concept is its internal crash structure. This structure can be adapted to different vehicle heights and widths, but the design and the components making it up remain the same.

For the external shell covering this crash structure any design can be realised. The result: individual design paired with optimum safety.
