Social security and sustainable climate protection for Haiti

Children and adolescents in Haiti receive a total of 1,000 trees for a tree planting project.

Deforestation has been a major problem in Haiti for decades – 97 % of the forests have now been destroyed. Deforestation has far-reaching consequences for both people and nature: Haiti is one of the countries most vulnerable to flooding and landslides, and local small-scale farmers are directly facing the consequences of climate change. In this precarious situation, millions of Haitians and especially children are dependent on help. For this reason, Voith and the Hanns Voith Foundation provided financial support as part of the #VoithCares program, through which Haitian children and young people received a total of 1,000 trees. The 1,000 planted trees provide erosion protection and at the same time help to mitigate the effects of climate change.

In addition, those trees provide social security for children and adolescents, as the value of the planted trees increases enormously over time. Through the later sale of the trees, the children can finance their education and improve their living conditions in the long term.

Furthermore, Voith donated €1,000 to another project of the nonprofit organization Haiti Children’s Aid Association as part of an additional fundraising campaign.
