NanoPro increases calender performance

   

2014-01-13 - NanoPro is a composite cover for calenders. Early operating experience in the paper industry has shown that the running performance of NanoPro is better than those for conventional covers, lowering operating and maintenance costs.

The strengths of NanoPro are its high level of barring resistance and low wear. The vibration-damping base layer of the multilayer roll cover counteracts undesirable vibrations; the abrasion resistance is increased above all by uniform distribution of the nanoparticles and an innovative concept of fiber reinforcement in the top layer. It shows its strength especially with high loads and speeds, thus typically with multi-nip calender applications starting at 350 kN/m and speeds starting at 1,500 m/min.

Practical testing at Laakirchen Papier AG fully demonstrated the advantages of the new roll cover, convincing Roland Stadlhuber, operating engineer at Laakirchen Papier AG, which is part of the Heinzel Group. For about a year the Janus calender has been running with three NanoPro-covered rolls. The paper mill in Laakirchen produces high-quality magazine paper on two SC paper machines. Before use of the new roll cover, the Janus calender was running at its limit. Despite that, the calender had become a bottleneck in production. “The efficiency and availability of the Janus could only be increased by optimal running intervals of the covers,” reports Stadlhuber. He is fully satisfied with the new cover. NanoPro has not only fulfilled his expectations, but clearly exceeded them.

The NanoPro composite roll cover from Voith is meanwhile successfully being used in about a dozen paper mills. It can be used for calendering of every paper grade, but preferably for LWC, WFC and SC paper. //
