Reducing Fuel Consumption With Exhaust –TurboCompound

Advancing Fuel Efficiency: Voith Transmission Solutions for TurboCompound

As a truck manufacturer, you are challenged to adhere to increasingly stricter emissions regulations such as the Euro 6 emissions standards set by the European Commission. At the same time, your customers look for increasingly efficient engines with low fuel consumption. How can you satisfy both? The answer lies in highly-efficient TurboCompound systems with torque transmission at low losses. Find out how our transmission solutions can help you achieve lower emissions.

Lower Emissions, Higher Profitability

Just 44% of the fuel’s energy actually reaches the drive train. The rest disappears into the air as thermal, friction and exhaust energy. Voith TurboCompound engines convert the thermal energy found in exhaust fumes into mechanical energy. Our transmission solutions with a hydrodynamic coupling effectively transfer this energy to the engine’s crankshaft. The result: an up to 6% decrease in fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

Key Benefits of a Transmission with an Economical Turbo Coupling:

  • Increased engine output at all speeds
  • Lower carbon emissions
  • Decreased fuel consumption
  • Greater energy efficiency

Intelligent Exhaust Heat Recovery: How It Works and Design

TurboCompound saves energy according to a simple yet effective principle:

  • Besides the turbocharger, the exhaust system is fitted with a second turbine
  • Residual exhaust heat drives the turbine, creating mechanical energy
  • A Voith transmission with a hydrodynamic coupling efficiently feeds the mechanical energy back to the crankshaft
  • The result: lower fuel consumption as the recovered energy is used to drive the diesel engine more efficiently

Technical Data of Voith Transmission with a Hydrodynamic Coupling:

  • Power: up to 75 kW
  • Output speed: 50.000 rpm
  • Operating range: 360-440 kW
