Voith Rail Service for High-Speed Trains

The operator Great Western Railway in Great Britain has contracted with Voith to provide service maintenance for the very prestigious high-speed train (HST) Class 43 in the South-West of England.

Re-commissioned in 2003, the high-speed train Class 43 series was fitted with a Voith cooling system which is now due for its second major overhaul. Voith carried out the first general overhaul of all the 134 cooling systems four years ago. Class 43 are diesel-electric-driven high-speed trains capable of reaching speeds of up 200 km/h in day-to-day operation.

Great Western Railway and Voith utilise a float of cooling systems to maintain service obligations during the overhaul program that is to be completed at Voith’s Service Centre in Greenford. All components are cleaned and inspected using original NDT methods with standard wearing parts renewed. Finally, the cooling system is reassembled and undergoes a function and tightness test on Voith’s test bench prior to delivery.

The Voith Turbo Ltd Service Centre is a dedicated service workshop that looks after all rail products, including couplers, electrical boxes, cooling systems, highly flexible couplings, transmissions and gear units. Voith Turbo Ltd is also able to overhaul non-Voith products, including couplers and cooling Systems.

Voith sees its Service Centre as an extremely important site for sales and service for rail vehicle components. Voith Rail Service employees apply their expertise on a daily basis and not only restore the quality and reliability of the components during maintenance but also further develop and improve them.
