Voith’s new Electrical Drive System can be integrated into any bus manufacturers’ vehicles without restrictions.
Heidenheim/Hanover. Environmentally friendly, quiet and no local exhaust emissions – in order to capitalize on the transition to sustainable transport in cities, for the first time, the Voith Group will present a fully electrical drive system for buses at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2018 in Hanover. The system can be integrated into buses of all the established manufacturers.

According to Dr. Uwe Knotzer, Chairman of the Management Board of Voith Turbo, the system, which consists of an electric motor, inverter and intelligent energy management system, will provide a significant impetus to the market for electromobility in public and private passenger transport. “As a system supplier and partner to the bus industry for decades, Voith combines comprehensive expertise in the fields of drives, e-mobility and telematics applications for the development of world-class products for the future of transport,” says Knotzer. During development, the focus was on the special requirements of local public transport. Thanks to its high power, the motor is also eminently suitable for driving heavy articulated buses up to 29 tons. Knotzer: “Our system can play a vital role in the electrification of inner-city bus fleets.”

Last year, Voith announced its intention to further enter the market of e-mobility. “With our fully electrical drive system for buses and our digital services for effective fleet management, we already offer the technology for the electrical mobility of tomorrow,” adds Knotzer. The first prototype of the electrical powertrain was implemented in a Solaris Urbino electric – and thanks to its low weight and digital energy management, it produces the absolute maximum in efficiency. The system can be tested at the IAA 2018 in Hanover as part of the “Test drives with electrically powered commercial vehicles” program. Following the motto “Drive New Ways”, Voith will be presenting numerous products and services for the commercial vehicle industry at Booth A14 in Hall 17.
