Lightweights with Great Effect:
Voith Is the World's Only Manufacturer of Water Retarders
As a pioneer in water technology for retarders, Voith now also offers a secondary retarder alongside its primary Aquatarder PWR: the Aquatarder SWR. At the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show, the specialist for drive technology will be presenting both products.
Aquatarders use the cooling agent of the engine as operating medium: Voith is the only manufacturer worldwide to offer this technology. The benefits of water over the conventional operating medium oil are obvious. The Voith Aquatarder is maintenance-free. Between six and twelve liters of oil can be saved per year, depending on the vehicle size. This reduces costs and protects the environment, and there is no need for waste oil removal. A resource-sparing technology that combines economic and ecological advantages.
With a modern retarder, truck or coach drivers can meanwhile perform up to 90 percent of all braking operations. This protects the linings of the service brake and there is up to 80 percent less brake dust. Projected to a million kilometers, this corresponds to about 50 kilograms less abrasion. And since the brake linings last significantly longer, the retarder also has economic advantages. In most cases, the investment pays off after just two years. Another plus: when using a retarder, vehicles have up to six percent higher average speeds.
Because retarders are genuine continuous brakes: they offer enormous safety reserves and prevent overheating (fading) of the brake linings, as well as cracks in the brake discs.
Voith Aquatarders thus combine economic and ecological advantages. In summary this means: higher safety, lower operating costs, fewer workshop stops and lower emissions. Aquatarders are maintenance-free and lighter; compared with the secondary oil retarder, the secondary water retarder weights 35 kilograms less. In addition, an Aquatarder needs minimum installation space due to its compact design.
The Aquatarder PWR is designed in such a way that, combined with the controlled engine brake, it provides a constant braking output of up to 610 kW across the entire speed range. It is the first choice for distribution trucks and construction site vehicles, but also perfectly suited for longdistance traffic, for example for tank and silo transports, where weight is critical.
Der Aquatarder SWR is an excellent solution for all truck operating profiles. In coaches, it is standard equipment as a safety component. A particular strength of the Aquatarder SWR are long routes with relatively high average speeds. Combined with the engine brake, it achieves a maximum braking power of 750 kW.
Voith Turbo, the specialist for hydrodynamic drive, coupling and braking systems for road, rail and industrial applications, as well as for ship propulsion systems, is a Group Division of Voith GmbH.
Voith sets standards in the markets energy, oil & gas, paper, raw materials and transportation & automotive. Founded in 1867, Voith employs almost 40 000 people, generates €5.6 billion in sales, operates in about 50 countries around the world and is today one of the biggest family-owned companies in Europe.
