Milestone for Industrial Production with Composites
Voith Roving Applicator Wins JEC Innovation Award 2017

  • A milestone in carbon fiber technology
  • Voith Innovation allows series production of CFRP components
  • Industrie 4.0 production at Voith sets standards in terms of efficiency and flexibility
Garching/Paris. At JEC 2017 in Paris, the world’s leading trade show for fiberreinforced components, the Voith Roving Applicator has won the JEC Innovation Award 2017 in the category “Manufacturing.“ This prestigious prize is awarded every year to honor breakthrough innovations in the field of composites.

The Voith Roving Applicator is a Voith-developed and patented process that allows the highly automated production of fiber-reinforced components in any desired lot size. With it, Voith Composites consistently implements the strategy “From the fiber directly into the component”. The Voith Roving Applicator is able to mechanically process the raw material carbon fiber directly. With its patented direct fiber placement procedure, it merges previously required individual processing steps into one, dispenses with the utilization of semi-finished parts in the production process and thus allows significantly higher cost and efficiency advantages.

“With the Voith Roving Applicator we are setting new standards in terms of flexibility, efficiency and quality,” states Voith Composites Managing Director Dr. Lars Herbeck. “Our Voith Roving Applicator allows the automated series production of CFRP components in almost any shape in individual lot sizes. Until recently this had not been possible at such a high level of automation and will open up new perspectives for CFRP as a material, especially in the automobile industry.”

The Voith Roving Applicator is at the core of the Industrie 4.0- production line at the R & D and production site of Voith Composites in Garching near Munich. The foundations for this large-scale production were laid by the development partnership between Voith Composites and the automobile manufacturer Audi, which has been in place since 2011. After its start-up phase, this production line, which is worldwide unique with its level of automation and its flexibility, is now successfully in service. The first user of the new Voith technology is Audi. In Garching, Voith is producing CFRP components on an industrial scale for a future Audi model.
