McCallum Enterprises Inc. awards digital governor contract to Voith

  • The project will install a new digital governor control system, hydraulic valve manifold, static exciter and automatic voltage regulator
  • The plant was at risk of unplanned outages because many control components were obsolete and unsupported by the component vendors
Derby Dam in Derby, Connecticut, is owned by McCallum Enterprises, who recently awarded a modernization contract to Voith.
DERBY, Conn. | YORK, Pa. (Oct. 23, 2019) – McCallum Enterprises Inc. recently awarded Voith with a contract to update its governor control system and exciter components at Derby Dam in Connecticut. Voith will be installing a digital governor control system, a hydraulic valve manifold, a static exciter and an automatic voltage regulator. The need for the updates was evident to McCallum, as it was using now-discontinued equipment in its governor and exciter control. This left the facility, which operates on the Housatonic River, at risk of unplanned outages due to the failure potential of obsolete equipment and an inability to get service and support on it.

The new equipment from Voith gives us an agile governor control system and other components, and we also now have a reliable partner to assist us with any future needs as we continue our digital transformation.
Joseph Szarmach, McCallum Enterprises Inc.

Both the digital control system and the voltage regulator will be operated using a platform-independent software package which allows for common interfacing between equipment and better support. The new hydraulic valve manifold will be used for gate and blade control, Further, the new digital systems have the potential to offer mobile visibility of the operation, allowing for remote automation of numerous system functions.

“Customers like McCallum Enterprises prefer to get these updates done at once, and we’re glad to be the single-source provider for them,” said Marko Preibisch, Senior Manager Upgrades, Voith. “Older mechanical and obsolete digital governor control systems, in particular, are a growing concern for many operators of hydro dams, and we have seen an uptick in requests for digital control upgrades that also improve efficiency and offer remote options. At Derby Dam, we are doing that along with replacing the static exciter system which relieves our customer from another important operational concern. ”

The project was awarded in late March 2019 and is expected to be installed in November. Derby Dam, a run-of-river overflow dam was commissioned in 1988 and generates 8MW megawatts of electricity.

Voith is installing a new governor and digital control system at Derby Dam in Connecticut. Along with that system, Voith is updating the dam’s hydraulic valve manifold, a static exciter and an automatic voltage regulator.
