Voith Hydro North America secures contract award for Fort Randall modernization project

  • U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Voith Hydro North America a contract for turbine and generator rehabilitation work at the Fort Randall Dam.
  • Voith will manufacture and install eight new Francis turbine runners and perform a generator stator rewind.
  • Much of the work will be completed at the Voith factory in York, Pa., and its small business partners across the United States.
  • The estimated project completion date is December 14, 2031.

PICKSTOWN, S.D. / YORK, Pa. (May 31, 2022) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Voith Hydro North America a contract for turbine and generator rehabilitation work at Fort Randall Dam.

Work on this contract began in January 2022 with hydraulic design and model testing. The field installation work will begin once the first runner is manufactured and delivered to the site in Pickstown, South Dakota. The estimated project completion date is December 14, 2031.

For this modernization contract, Voith will manufacture and install eight new Francis turbine runners and perform a generator stator rewind for Units 1-8 at the Fort Randall Dam.

This is another landmark modernization project Voith Hydro’s North American team will perform for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Fort Randall Dam, which is operated by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, sits along the Missouri River, forming Lake Francis. Fort Randall is the 11th largest dam in the U.S. and has been generating electricity since 1954.

In addition to building and installing eight new turbine runners, we will perform model testing in Voith’s hydraulic laboratory; rehabilitate the headcovers and wicket gates; and perform a generator stator rewind.

Voith Hydro has a long history of collaboration with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and has worked with the Omaha District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on several other important projects including a turbine replacement project at Fort Peck and an ongoing cavitation repair project at the Gavins Point Dam.
