Our Service

We lead the industry in maintenance and modernization of hydroelectric generation facilities. Our field machining equipment exceeds requirements and allows us to work on site and in place to create a custom solution for your needs.

And if the unexpected or unplanned happens, Voith Hydro Services can be on site quickly. We have extensive resources that allow us to provide the manpower and equipment to get you back online.

We restore components using specially designed machine systems applying welding and machining processes through procedures developed and qualified in the test laboratory and repeatedly proven in the field.

This includes machining bottom rings, discharge rings, draft tube liners and upper and lower stay rings. Voith Hydro Services developed and patented technology that allows us to overlay the discharge rings of Kaplan, Francis and Pump turbines.

We have access to the expertise of more than 400 engineers. Many of these engineers originally designed and built the turbines we are now restoring. As a division of Voith Hydro, Voith Hydro Services’ engineers are both home grown and have joined us from other companies, including other brands.

But, no matter the brand, we will restore embedded components to meet OEM standards.

Repairs and procedures include:

  • machining with live milling heads or single-point tools
  • installing anchors to control distortion during welding
  • applying weld build-up with up to eight automatic welding stations
  • delivering finished machined surfaces with diametric tolerances of 0.005-inch or better
  • producing a finished product with uniform diameters, finish and fairness
  • reducing clearance between the blade tips and discharge ring to increase overall efficiency
  • giving the discharge ring a consistent contour featuring new material that resists future cavitation
  • line boring wicket gate bores, coupling boring of turbine and generator shafts

Cavitation repair

Cavitation is a phenomenon occurring on all types of turbine runners, pump impellers and associated equipment. Over time, cavitation erodes the turbine material, causing pits in the equipment, and destroying high tolerance hydraulic surfaces and other critical passageways.

Cavitation reduces efficiency, shortens equipment life and can cause major equipment failures.

With our innovative technology and extensive cavitation repair experience, Voith Hydro Services provides:

  • Specialized welding procedures
  • Controlled heat distortion
  • Restored hydraulic profiles
  • Prolonged life of the runner, and ultimately the turbine components

Valve repair

Voith Hydro Services can return spherical and butterfly valves to their original OEM specifications. Our modernized seal technology means we can improve the valve to today’s higher industry standards.

Voith Hydro Services machines seal seating surfaces to stop leakage with or without the valve installed. We do this using machining equipment specifically designed by Voith Hydro Services.

We can also repair or modify:

  • Machining seals
  • Rotor ball seal seats
  • Flange faces
  • Valve trunnions

We use stainless steel, aluminum bronze or customer-specified filler metal welding processes.

Pump repair

Voith Hydro Services returns vertical pumps to their original OEM standards and has successfully modernized the carbon steel embedded components of some of America’s most important municipal water supply and irrigation districts.

Our team removes cavitated carbon steel pump components and completely replaces them with stainless steel and/or overlay.

Stainless steel provides durability, thus reducing maintenance cost and unit down time.

Voith Hydro Services can assist with any aspect of pump repair, and help get repairs done quickly, and ultimately get the machine operating quickly.

Crack repair

Voith Hydro Services offers on-site repair of cracked runners, stay vanes, stay rings, head covers, bottom rings, thrust bridges, rotor and stator frames. Our team knows the importance of fixing cracks and keeping your equipment in pristine condition.

At Voith Hydro Services, we not only fix fractures, but we work on finding a reason why there is a crack in the first place. We can stop the root cause of cracks, ensuring you fewer repair costs in the future

Runner repair

The Voith Hydro Services team uses semi-automatic welding processes to repair runners. This technique helps you decrease downtime and increase productivity.

Our runner repair works hand-in-hand with cavitation and crack repair, giving you a full range of equipment restoration.

Grout placement

Voith Hydro Services uses grout placed behind repaired areas to fill voids and stabilize unit components, which decreases operational failures caused by fatigue.

Repair of embedded components and changes to powerhouse structures over their life often create voids between the component and its structure concrete support. To eliminate these voids and fully support the component, Voith Hydro Services has developed systems to inject either a cementitious grout or an epoxy resin.

With placements exceeding a 100 cubic yards and as little as a gallon, we bring the required experience to meet the specific needs of each job.

Stay Vane Repair, Replacement and/or Modification

Voith Hydro Services offers a full complement of work practices to repair your existing stay vane problems. We can repair existing cavitation or fractures, modify the hydraulic profile to meet engineered changes and/or add engineered extensions to existing stay vanes. In extreme circumstances the entire stay vane can be replaced.

Discharge Ring and Draft Tube Liner Repair

Voith Hydro Services can perform discharge ring and draft tube liner repair with or without the runner installed. The replacement rolled steel plate is cut to size, anchored in place and welded to OEM standards.
