Couplers

Typ 10

Type 10

The Type 10 Scharfenberg coupler is used in almost all national railways, even in high-speed applications. This coupler is characterized by its especially high-strength and a large gathering range laterally and vertically. This coupler has been the standard on high-speed trains since 2002 and has now been incorporated into the TSI Standards. The Type 10 can transmit a buff load of 1,500 kN and a draft load of 1,000 kN.

Typ 35

The Type 35 is especially well-suited for vehicles without a compressed-air system. On these fully electrified vehicles, the coupler can transmit a buff load of 1,300 kN and a draft load of up to 850 kN. The Type 35 is used primarily in light rail and tram, metro and regional transportation applications.

Semi-Permanent Couplers

Semi-permanent coupler with air couplings, electrical coupling, impact absorber and support for transition

Semi-Permanent Coupler Principle

Scharfenberg semi-permanent couplers provide secure and safe connections within a trainset. Since coupling and uncoupling do not take place during normal operation, automatic operation is not necessary. Semi-permanent couplers can be equipped with impact-absorbing elements as well as with electrical and pneumatic couplings.

Benefits

  • Rigid, backlash-free connection
  • Can connect pneumatic and electric lines
  • May also be used as an anti-climbing guard
  • Damps vehicle motion along the longitudinal axis
  • Optionally available with a support for the transition between coaches

Transitional Couplers

Modulare Übergangskupplung

Modular transitional coupler

Transitional couplers are used when vehicles have different types of couplers or coupling heights, e.g. when shunting and towing. Until now, this frequently required special designs. The new, modular transitional coupler separates the different components into two separate heads and an adapter that forms the step. The two separate heads can also be connected to one another directly. This makes it possible to combine coupler heads of any kind and at different heights easily into an transitional coupler.

When towing is necessary or when shunting, transitional couplers are often mounted on the train for a short period of time by the operating personnel. For this reason, they should be light yet still withstand the high operating loads encountered when towing entire trains. In order to reduce weight even further, coupler bodies can be constructed from CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) today. Until now, this high-performance material has been used primarily in aviation. Load tests have provided results that demonstrate its performance capabilities. These can be optimized even further through refinement.

Additional Couplers

SA3 Coupler with Energy Absorption

SA3 couplers are the perfect example of all freight couplers. SA3 coupler heads are extremely robust and designed for heavy load applications, like those in coals or iron ore transportation.
Voith has developed an advanced, modular type of the SA3 coupler head. The coupler can be perfectly adapted to customer requirements and combined with Voith energy absorption systems. Furthermore, automation features can be integrated.

AAR Kupplung

AAR couplers

AAR couplers are the standard for railcars in the American market. They transmit large mechanical forces and couple automatically. Connection of compressed air or electricity, however, is not a standard feature. Because of the large amount of play between the coupled heads, this is not easily accomplished. In the context of crash energy management, we have developed an energy-absorbing system that can also be used with AAR couplers. This provides greater functionality and safety. more

Typ GF

Type GF

The Type GF automatic coupler is very common in Belgium and Switzerland. During coupling, the conical elements engage their their funnel-shaped counterparts in the mating coupler and are locked in place. The couplers can be provided with air and electrical couplings and transmit a buff load of 1,500 kN and a draft load of 1,000 kN in the standard design.
