Fiber Technology Centers
We combine state-of-the-art papermaking with processes and systems customized for specific applications. In this context, the Fiber Technology Center carries out stock preparation tests on primary and secondary furnish under production conditions. Through trials of individual machines or complete process tests we help you to simulate your own specific production conditions.

Paper and Board Technology Center
At the Paper and Board Technology Center in Heidenheim, a paper machine and different test rigs allow you to examine your process under real conditions. A vast range of different paper grades can be tested. The pilot paper machine enables you to test different machine layouts and different machine settings – along with tailor-made fabrics. Chemical dosing and dosing applications with stock can be adapted to the needs of your products.
For best results, we work closely with our Technology Centers for coating and calendering. Our modern laboratories analyze all the relevant parameters, to ensure reliable results for your pilot trials. The pilot reel is an industrial-scale reel that can perform automatic reel changes. This enables detailed analysis of your paper parameters. Through modeling and Simulation, the best design and settings for new machines can be found even before they undergo trials. Additionally, all above mentioned equipment is used to test new developments of Voith Paper.

Coating Technology Centers
The pilot coaters at our technology centers offer the perfect opportunity to study coating processes and paper properties under real conditions. We provide you with the support you need to develop your own customized coating concept, carry out trials right up to the printing stage, and undertake basic studies to analyze the influence of machine parameters, coating colors or base paper on coated paper properties.
The pilot coaters at the Coating Technology Centers in Heidenheim and Motomiya offer the possibility of sizing or coating paper on different coating units. Along with state-of-the art methods like film press and blade coating, the latest technology like multi-layer curtain coating can also be demonstrated. The complete coating process for every grade from specialty up to board can be examined with your base paper and coating color raw materials. Finally, the best concept for your investment will be chosen. Furthermore, our experts support you in developing new paper products, such as new functionalities like barrier layers. Even the production of small lots for market test purposes is possible.
The Coating Technology Centers are also used frequently by R&D to test and demonstrate new Voith technology.

Calendering Technology Center
With the pilot calenders at the Heidenheim Calendering Technology Center, the best possible combination of nip pressure, temperature and roll surface for each grade can be determined for your products, whether they are board and packaging, specialty, or graphic papers. As a result of the trials, you will successfully reach your project goals and produce your target paper quality with the tailor-made calender concept.
We can provide you with different calender technologies to customize your paper to your customers’ needs. Various options for the pre-conditioning of your paper prior to calendering will bring the pilot process close to reality.
Highly skilled engineers and machine operators ensure the smooth execution of the pilot runs and evaluation of the results. The results are significant and reliable and provide clarity regarding the measures to be carried out on your machines.

Tissue Technology Center
Voith Tissue Technology Center in São Paulo, Brazil, offers a broad range of customer-specific tissue trials in mill-like conditions and supports R&D tissue.
The Tissue Technology Center consists of a complete high-speed pilot machine, stock preparation unit, water treatment plant, and laboratory facilities. The modular pilot machine is able to cover the full product spectrum from standard dry crepe to ultra premium structured paper grades. A tailor-made trial at the Tissue Technology Center gives a valuable competitive edge when developing new tissue products, exploring alternative fiber materials and chemistry or introducing new Voith technologies.

Specialty Technology Center
The focus is on wet-laid processes at the Specialty Technology Center in Düren, Germany, where new forest-based and non-forest-based products can be developed and their manufacturing verified on an inclined former section. Here new Voith units (R&D) and individual machines for the wet-laid process are tested and perfected. The technology center is equipped with two pulpers, three machine chests, a refiner and deflaker to support you in developing new wet-laid products. The HydroFormer headbox and white water loop are suitable for 1, 2 and 3-ply tests.
In the Specialty Technology Center, tests on the inclined wire simulate production conditions. By using our pilot plants, we ensure tailor-made machines that offer optimal performance at your facility from the first day. In addition, operating parameters can be determined to prepare for system commissioning at your paper mill. The clothing can also be tested and optimized beforehand.
Key physical parameters can then be measured and evaluated in the adjacent laboratory.

We provide the optimal analytical technology for fiber, paper and coating color. The samples taken from our pilot plant facilities are analyzed in the Voith laboratories using the latest techniques. This provides precise test data as a further basis for assessing the pilot plant results. For this reason our laboratory staff work closely with our R&D experts. You, as our customers, therefore benefit from the scientific know-how of our laboratory specialists, as they can analyze samples from your own plants.
We also use the laboratory for complex measurements that solve relevant problems for you.
We offer rapid and precisely reproducible analysis of stock, water and paper characteristics, using more than 80 different laboratory methods according to DIN, ISO, TAPPI or SCAN. Moreover, we use a professional IT system for all sample management and logging of laboratory test data. As an example, with the brand new powerful µ-CT (computer tomography), even small, hidden defects in the paper, not visible with common methods, will be detected and analyzed. All these results provide you with a dependable and conclusive foundation for decision-making, to support your process optimization investments.
