Copper Mining in the Chilean Andes

Every cellphone contains copper. Without copper, computers would not work. The value of this precious metal has risen dramatically over the last few years. No wonder that people are willing to go to ever higher extremes to extract it at an altitude of 4 500 meters in the world's driest desert. And Voith is involved, too: with fluid couplings that are fit for all duties.

Mining raw materials under harshest conditions

Nearly 40% of the world's copper deposits are found in Chile. Every year, the country brings 5.3 million tons to the global markets. This is more than the combined output of the USA, Peru, China and Australia.

The largest mining area is in the Atacama, the driest desert in the world. Whoever works here has to be really tough. This applies to the people – and also the machinery.

Smooth and gentle power transmission

Nobody can afford to stand still here. The large mines produce up to 83 000 tons of copper per year. In order to reach such quantities, up to 1 300 tons of copper-containing rocks are transported to the sulphur basins on long conveyor belts every hour. The conveyors have to cope with fierce jolts and strong vibrations.

Voith fluid couplings make this transport trouble-free. They ensure that accelerations are performed smoothly. This protects the belt and extends its service life – a cost advantages that pays off in the long run.

Reliable whatever the weather

Another advantage is their robustness. Compared to other solutions that are more prone to interruptions, Voith fluid couplings run trouble-free and with virtually no wear. Be it hot, cold or at high altitude in thin air. Up here in the Atacama, the first turbo couplings have been running for more than ten years without causing downtimes.

This is why the mine operator values them highly: for their reliability and their high efficiency. And this is also the reason why follow-on orders for further fluid couplings went to Voith.
