Solutions for the Steel Industry

The slab is red hot when it leaves the continuous casting mill before it is straightened in a plate rolling mill to a length of 80 meters. The rolls move forwards and backwards. The universal joint shafts of this heavy plate mill of Baosteel near Shanghai have been supplied by Voith – and they convince by their reliability and energy efficiency. This was also the reason why Baosteel decided in favor of the Voith solution.

Metal sheets from high-strength steel for any application

When the semi-finished product leaves the plate rolling mill, the slab with its thickness of 50 centimeters has become a thin sheet of metal – five meters wide, 80 meters long. High-strength steel to be used in ship building, bridge construction or in pipelines. China's continuously growing economy has an ever-rising need for steel. Nowhere else is production higher – be it for domestic use or for export purposes.

Pilot project 5.0 m heavy plate mill

With nearly 35 tons per year Baoshan Iron & Steel Co., Ltd. (or Baosteel in short) is the country's largest steel producer and one of the world's ten major steel companies. For this reason alone, participation in the plate rolling mill opened in 2006 was an important project for Voith – and because it was a pilot project. But the customer also had excellent reasons to decide in favor of Voith universal joint shafts: because of their high reliability and their excellent efficiency.

Incredibly energy-efficient

The universal joint shafts have low-friction roller bearings and require little maintenance. The twelve-meter, 45-ton universal shafts have extremely high torque capacities. This increases availability and ultimately raises productivity. With their energy efficiency they make a vital contribution to reducing CO2 emissions by 620 tons. The energy consumptions drops by up to 1 200 megawatt hours. This corresponds to the requirements of 650 households. And it pays off - with every meter of heavy plate rolled from the slabs.

Other Voith solutions for the steel industry are start-up couplings, torque-limiting couplings as well as geared variable-speed couplings.
