HEIDENHEIM, GERMANY. As part of a modernization program, thyssenkrupp Steel Europe AG is replacing two of its Rhine pusher boats with modern, diesel-electric vessels. These are characterized by high energy efficiency and make an important contribution to environmental protection. Propulsion is provided by two Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP) type 18R5 EC/150-1 each, each with an input power of 780 kW. The two vessels will be built at Barkmeijer Shipyards B.V. in the Netherlands and delivery of the propellers is scheduled for January 2021. Voith will supply a total of four VSPs and one additional spare propeller. Since the 1970s, the two pusher boats Thyssen I and Thyssen II have been maneuvering barges on the Rhine in the Duisburg port area. To do this they need a strong propulsion system, which is provided by the two VSPs at the stern of each vessel. The proven drive concept is now also to be implemented in the new vessels. This decision was based on the high level of reliability and performance offered by the VSPs. The new vessels will operate even more efficiently thanks to the latest generation of VSP and their optimum integration into the ship design. The high efficiencyduring operation has been verified by independent model tests.

Apart from its high energy efficiency, the VSP convinced with its unique maneuverability. This enables precise steering on demanding waters with changing conditions and water levels. However, when maneuvering barges in the narrow port of Duisburg-Schwelgern, it is not always possible to avoid shocks on the boats or contacts with foreign bodies like anchor chains. But thanks to the robust design of the VSP, these very rarely result in damage to the propulsion system.

“The Voith Schneider Propeller delivers impressive results thanks to its high reliability and low maintenance requirements. The outstanding efficiency of the VSP minimizes power requirements and therefore reduces fuel consumption while maximizing safety for the vessel and the environment,” says Michael Rommel, Head of Sales & Application Management at Voith, summing up the benefits of the proven propulsion system.
