950 DIWA.6 transmissions for Berlin buses
- Biggest single DIWA order to date for Voith
- Cutting-edge automatic transmissions for up to 600 Citaro articulated buses and 350 solo buses
- For many years, DIWA transmissions have been ensuring efficient and sustainable mobility on Berlin’s streets

Delivery of the first batch of more than 100 articulated buses and 50 solo buses will begin as soon as the start of 2019. The DIWA.6 automatic transmission is a key component for highly efficient, low-pollution bus operation.
In what is currently the most modern automatic transmission from the proven DIWA product family, an intelligent start-up management system with reduction of operating pressure and optimized converter reduces fuel consumption by up to five percent. This cuts CO2 emissions and therefore protects the environment. The automatic transmission also allows stepless starting and braking in the first speed range. When used in city buses this enables up to 50 percent of all gear shifts to be avoided. This results in a more pleasant ride, reduces wear on the drive train and increases vehicle availability.
“The key to confidence in our products is the longstanding partnership between Voith and BVG”, says Helmut Zimmermann, Regional Sales Director for Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH) at Voith. The Heidenheim-based technology group was fitting BVG buses with DIWA transmissions as far back as the late 1950s. The transport company is also a service base for DIWA transmissions. The new framework agreement has been designed to be flexible, so there is no purchase obligation. This means that during the term of the agreement, BVG has the option of inviting tenders for electric buses, for example. For this technology too, Voith has already developed components like the electrical drive system that the company introduced at the beginning of 2018 with its electric demonstrator bus.
BVG currently operates around 1,400 buses on its 154 bus routes and transported more than 441 million passengers in 2017.
