KAZAN, RUSSIA. Voith and Siemens Mobility signed a 30-year service contract for railway couplers in the fall of 2020. Within the framework of the contract, Voith will carry out a major overhaul of more than 3,800 couplers of the Velaro RUS and Desiro RUS fleet by 2050. The first overhauled couplers already left the Voith plant in Kazan at the end of 2020. Voith has delivered couplers to Ural Locomotives, a joint venture of Siemens and the Sinara Group, and to Siemens Mobility in Krefeld, Germany since 2012. Altogether, the company has equipped 29 Sapsan high-speed trains with automatic type 10 couplers and 84 Lastochka commuter trains with automatic and semi-automatic type 10 couplers. The Sapsan is based on the successful Velaro platform derived from the German ICE 3, while the Lastochka has its origins in the Desiro platform of Siemens Mobility.

After up to eight years in operation and having traveled up to 1,000,000 kilometers, the first major overhaul of one part of the trains was due at the end of 2020. Siemens Mobility will carry out the service of the entire fleet in Russia for the next 30 years. For the major overhaul of the couplers, the company found a strong partner in Voith, which can provide this service locally in Russia. In the selection process, Siemens Mobility placed particular importance on technical expertise and reliability through to 2050. With their many years of international experience in the service sector for couplers and their own plant in Kazan, Voith met these requirements perfectly.

I would especially like to point out the outstanding cooperation, both internally and with the customer. We were able to successfully get this project off the ground despite the difficult conditions brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Michael Klug, Vice President Sales Eastern Europe & CIS at Voith

Another strong pillar

Until recently, Voith has predominantly produced DIWA automatic transmissions and provided services for buses at its plant in Kazan. “With the long-term service contract for the major overhaul of the couplers, we have gained another strong pillar in Kazan. We are convinced that other operators will also benefit from this flagship project,” says Michael Klug, Vice President Sales Eastern Europe & CIS at Voith.

In addition to the Siemens and Voith headquarters in Germany, local organizations in Russia were also involved in the contract negotiations.
