Voith expands service business for railway couplers
- Siemens Mobility commissions Voith to carry out a major overhaul of more than 3,800 railway couplers.
- Voith will perform the overhauls locally in their plant in Kazan, Russia.
- By expanding the service business, Voith has strengthened their market presence in Russia.

After up to eight years in operation and having traveled up to 1,000,000 kilometers, the first major overhaul of one part of the trains was due at the end of 2020. Siemens Mobility will carry out the service of the entire fleet in Russia for the next 30 years. For the major overhaul of the couplers, the company found a strong partner in Voith, which can provide this service locally in Russia. In the selection process, Siemens Mobility placed particular importance on technical expertise and reliability through to 2050. With their many years of international experience in the service sector for couplers and their own plant in Kazan, Voith met these requirements perfectly.
Another strong pillar
Until recently, Voith has predominantly produced DIWA automatic transmissions and provided services for buses at its plant in Kazan. “With the long-term service contract for the major overhaul of the couplers, we have gained another strong pillar in Kazan. We are convinced that other operators will also benefit from this flagship project,” says Michael Klug, Vice President Sales Eastern Europe & CIS at Voith.
In addition to the Siemens and Voith headquarters in Germany, local organizations in Russia were also involved in the contract negotiations.
