Voith successfully performs virtual locomotive acceptance

  • First virtual locomotive acceptance performed at service facility in Kiel due to pandemic-related travel restrictions and to protect personnel.
  • Video collaboration-platform OnCall.Video allows real-time communication around the clock and from any location.
  • Voith plans to tap into new areas of application for OnCall.Video for the servicing of rail vehicles.
KIEL, GERMANY. As part of the service agreement concluded with Lineas in 2020 for 30 locomotives type HLD 77, Voith conducted a major overhaul and other maintenance measures on vehicle No. 7708 in February 2021. Due to the pandemic-related travel restrictions and to protect staff, the locomotive acceptance was conducted virtually for the first time at Voith’s service facility in Kiel. With the help of OnCall.Video, Voith’s digital tool for providing remote video support, the customer was able to follow the entire acceptance in real time.

With the audio-visual communication system OnCall.Video, customers worldwide can draw on Voith expertise via an internet-based video collaboration platform at any time and from any location. A high-resolution helmet camera transmitted the service activities performed on the locomotive to the customer in real time. Industrial-grade smart data glasses with integrated voice control and active noise cancellation ensured optimum communication despite the noisy environment and allowed interaction between the participants. In addition to passing on instructions and documents, the customer was also able to convey important information quickly to the service technician.

Virtual locomotive acceptance with OnCall.Video
Thanks to OnCall.Video, the customer was able to follow the entire acceptance in real time.
Despite the pandemic-related restrictions the acceptance was very successful. I had all the relevant documents on my screen and was able to take notes, screenshots or video recordings for record-keeping purposes during the entire acceptance.
Claire Giannone, Reliability Manager Locomotives at Lineas

Given the positive response and in view of the ongoing pandemic, Voith is planning to tap into other areas of application for OnCall.Video in conjunction with the servicing of rail vehicles. The expansion of the digital service portfolio will lead to greater flexibility and faster response times. In addition to saving CO2 through less traveling, this can also significantly reduce downtimes at the customer’s site.
