Apply nowSnowy 2.0 will underpin Australia’s renewable energy future
The Fifth Continent has the potential to cover 100 percent of its energy needs from renewable energy sources. Australia intends to achieve the first 50 percent by 2024. How? With pumped storage technology from Voith.
Snowy 2.0 will be one of the world’s largest pumped-storage power plants and Voith is making a major contribution with its experience and hydropower components. It will connect the two existing dams of the Snowy Scheme, Tantangara Dam and Talbingo Dam, through underground tunnels and an underground power station with pumping and generating capacity. The underground power house will house six reversible Francis-type pump turbines. The capacity of the plant is designed for 2,000 megawatts and allows 175 hours of storage. The first power out of Snowy 2.0 is expected early as 2028.

Jarrod Lengs, General Manager Commercial & Contracts Snowy Hydro 2.0
Jarrod Lengs leads the integrated team across Australia and Germany responsible for Contract Management, Cost Controlling and reporting, and Commercial Management.
How would you describe the project Snowy 2.0 in your own words?
This is a nation building project and one of the largest projects in Australia, extremely important for the stability of the power grid in Australia and supporting the rapid decarbonization and green energy transition.
What are your specific tasks and responsibilities in this project?
As General Manager Commercial and Contracts I lead the integrated team across Australia and Germany responsible for Contract Management, Cost Controlling and reporting, and Commercial Management.
How do the communication and coordination between the local teams in Australia and the colleagues in Germany work?
Having an integrated team across multiple functions means we need to be able to really communicate and also trust our colleagues working across different time zones. The team is growing and I am proud we are developing a really great team culture. Honest communication is important as well as face to face time. Also important to understand both Germany and Australia work locations and cultures are different. It is really great to have a diverse multicultural team with people originating from Germany, Brazil, India, South Africa (and Australia).
Could you share a special moment or experience from the project?
After we completed the “reset” of the contract and commercial model it is now really great to see members of the team embracing new ways of working with our customers, including integrating them in decisions and even collocating. Change is hard for most people but it is really great to see the Voithians’ spirit in trying to really do the best for the Project (even if it is different and uncomfortable from what we are used to).
