Some tidbits of information about H2 storage
How much hydrogen does a truck use?
The hydrogen consumption of a truck depends on various factors such as the size of the vehicle, the load, the driving style and the routes driven. On average, a hydrogen-powered truck consumes around 7-10 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 kilometers. Modern hydrogen fuel cell systems are designed to ensure high efficiency. Trucks can achieve a range of up to 1000 kilometers on a single tank of fuel. This makes hydrogen an attractive alternative to diesel for heavy goods transportation, especially over long distances.
How is hydrogen stored in hydrogen-powered trucks?
In hydrogen-powered trucks the gas is usually stored in special high-pressure tanks. These vessels are made of robust materials such as carbon fiber-reinforced plastic and can store hydrogen at pressures of up to 700 bar. High-pressure storage enables a high energy density and therefore a greater range for the vehicle. Alternatively, hydrogen is also stored in liquid form at very low temperatures, but this requires more complex technical solutions, which generally makes this method uneconomical.
What is a hydrogen storage system for trucks?
A hydrogen storage system for trucks is a special device that stores hydrogen safely and efficiently so that it can be used to power the vehicle. It consists of high-pressure tanks that can store hydrogen at pressures of up to 700 bar, as well as the associated safety and control mechanisms. By using hydrogen as a clean energy source, the storage system can be an important component for an emission-free freight transport.
The circle of the product life
To make the hydrogen storage technology even more sustainable for future generations, Voith is developing a recycling process for the carbon-plastic materials. With a decade of research experience in this area, we are striving to achieve a circular economy over the entire product life cycle. Another step towards a decarbonized future.
