The SIA Schüler-Ingenieur-Akademie (Student-Engineering Academy) represents a cooperation model of schools, universities and industry. Founded in 2000 at the Max Planck Grammar School in Heidenheim, the SIA has meanwhile been introduced throughout Baden-Württemberg, and the number of participating grammar schools has significantly increased. Today, there are SIAs in over 50 towns and cities.
Last week, 16 school students were invited to the closing event of SIA at Voith in Heidenheim. The model enables school students who are interested in engineering to get in touch with companies and universities.
During their time at SIA the school students gained an insight into the everyday life of MINT jobs (mathematics, informatics, natural sciences and technology), where the shortage of skilled professionals will increase further over the next few years. In addition, they developed and built a number of small technical projects, for example a “garage parking system“ or a “flying car.“ Two projects that had already been successful at the German youth science competition “Jugend Forscht.”
It has been shown that SIA graduates are viewed more favorably when they apply for jobs, since companies appreciate the commitment of the students. In addition, completing the SIA certificate may be recognized as a special learning achievement in the high school graduation diploma and could, for example, replace the oral examination.
Participants of the SIA project are Voith, Max-Planck Grammar School, Aalen University, DHBW Baden-Württemberg Cooperative State University Heidenheim, as well as Zeiss. In addition, SIA is also sponsored by Südwestmetall, the Association of Metal and Electronics Industries in Baden-Württemberg.
