The Heidenheim Technical School nominated Carsten Wörner for this prize due to his "special commitment, his innovative achievements and his tireless dedication". The panel was impressed by his commitment to his studies and also his activities in the training operation. At Voith, Carsten Wörner acts as a training ambassador and commits to the practical vocational training with energy.
Together with trainees Eugen Brenner and Werner Klein, as well as trainees and students from various courses, Carsten Wörner is handling a project for Voith Hydro. If deals with the "Coating system for taper keys used for generator installation" at Hydro.
Plastic taper keys are integrated during generator installation to tension the
stator windings. To simplify the installation, a layer of wax must be applied the taper keys. Until now, this has been a time-consuming manual process. The goal was to develop a more cost-effective and faster method for this process step.
First, a test rig was built to determine the required data. After tests had been successfully carried out, design work on the coating system began. Production started after just 4 weeks. Along with Carsten Wörner, trainees from the industrial mechanic and cutting machine operator occupations were also integrated.
The plant was completed at precisely the right time for the required generator installation in mid-January 2016. The machine coats 4000 taper keys with wax in 160 mins.
In just the first run, production time has been cut by over 90% compared to manual coating, with the same quality.
