Voith has been active in Brazil since 1964 operating own subsidiaries and production facilities in the country ever since. As a modern and innovative Brazilian company with German roots, and as the longest standing Voith branch outside Europe, Voith Brazil to date has been an example of successful internationalization and localization. In 2014, Voith will celebrate the company’s 50th anniversary in Brazil.

Today, Voith is one of the companies that have contributed to writing the history of hydropower generation in Brazil and Latin America. With its manufacturing facilities in Brazil approaching their 50th anniversary, the Voith Group delivered its first shipment to Brazil in 1905 to the Itatinga hydropower plant, a project located on the coast of the state of São Paulo. Nearly 50 percent of Latin America's currently installed hydropower capacity comes from plants running Voith Hydro solutions.

The Brazilian subsidiaries in São Paulo and Manaus have become a reference worldwide in supplying complete solutions for hydropower plants of all sizes and in numerous countries, for example of the hydropower plants of Amoyá in Colombia, Confluencia in Chile, Baba in Ecuador as well as Estreito, Santo Antonio, Jirau and Belo Monte in Brazil.

In order to meet the energy demand in the country's North Region, Voith Hydro installed a manufacturing plant in Manaus in 2010. “Having a plant in this region allows for greater speed in supplying solutions for hydro power plants, in addition to ensuring enhanced post-sales support. We are absolutely prepared for the coming projects, such as those in the Tapajós complex" explains Osvaldo San Martin, President and CEO of Voith Hydro in Brazil.

“This important award is an acknowledgment of our permanent commitment to Brazil", states San Martin. “We have continuously invested in the country, contributing with our solutions for the maintenance and expansion of a clean energy mix. We are suppliers of complete solutions for the largest hydro power generation projects in the country and in Latin America – which are deemed strategic to ensure the supply of electrical energy and hence the region's economic development and growth”, he concludes.

The Importance of Hydro Power
Hydro power is the largest, oldest and also most reliable form of renewable energy generation. Worldwide it makes an indispensable contribution to stable power supplies and hence to economic and social development - in industrial countries and also in rapidly growing regions. At the same time, hydro power significantly contributes to climate-protecting energy generation. Voith has been a leading supplier of this technology since the early beginning of hydro power utilization, and continuously develops and improves this technology.
