Best-in-class efficiency in 2024: New benchmark set by Voith and ADL.
In 2024, the innovative Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS) has once more proven its best-in-class efficiency in the official zero-emission bus testing and certification by the non-profit organization Zemo Partnership. This time Voith is collaborating with Alexander Dennis (ADL) in its new battery-electric bus models Enviro400EV and Enviro100EV.
10% efficiency advantage over comparable competitors’ vehicles
Thanks to its use of the heavy-duty version of the VEDS, the battery-electric, double-decker Enviro400EV has set a new benchmark and was extremely efficient across all parts of the UK Bus Cycle at UTAC Millbrook – including the demanding inner-urban element.
Combined with a future-proof battery system, the 0.67 kWh/km energy consumption of the VEDS gives the Enviro400EV a stunning theoretical operating range of up to 620 km (385 miles) on a single charge. Thus, the bus is delivering a 10% efficiency advantage over competitors’ vehicles with comparable battery size.
84% lower well-to-wheel greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
In addition to demonstrating the Enviro400EV’s exceptional energy efficiency due to the VEDS, its zero-emission bus certification also confirms that its well-to-wheel GHG emissions when charged with UK grid electricity are 84% lower than those of an average Euro VI diesel equivalent vehicle.
According to Chris Gall, Engineering Director at Alexander Dennis, “These results demonstrate not only the expertise of our fantastic engineering team who designed and developed the bus, together with strong partners like Voith, but it also encourages us to continually raise the bar. We’re lowering customers’ operating costs through reduced energy consumption and ensuring the transition to zero-emission technology is both sustainable and profitable.”
Best choice for electrification of bus fleets
Also driven by the VEDS and noteworthy as well is the achievement of 0.54 kWh/km efficiency of the small single-decker Enviro100EV, which Alexander Dennis says has no comparable in the world. So, in the end it is 100% clear: VEDS is almost always the best choice for the electrification of bus fleets.
And the success story continues: After the Enviro400EV and Enviro100EV, the Enviro200EV will be the next model Voith develops and engineers with Alexander Dennis. This is the largest-scale, single-decker vehicle in their battery-electric portfolio that is powered by VEDS. Its market launch is expected in the second half of 2025 – and will eventually set another new benchmark.
