Every resource you don’t consume makes our world a better place
It is our responsibility as a full-line supplier to secure the lowest resource consumption. Our innovations focus on helping our customers minimize their CO2 footprint as well as water and fiber consumption.
On this page, we demonstrate to paper manufacturers for the first time the concrete possibilities that arise when the paper manufacturing process is viewed holistically. With our process know-how, we can significantly reduce the use of resources in production and thus help paper manufacturers to reduce their costs. Our goal is a striking balance between the growth of the paper industry and sustainability – To make our world better with paper.

Our solutions for sustainable production
Only by taking all cycles, consumptions and interactions into account can the paper manufacturing process be optimally integrated – whether regarding paper quality, productivity or use of resources. Whether a new system or an existing production line, solutions and products from Voith can be implemented in every area.
Save water with our products
Water is precious. The world’s dwindling water supply is a growing concern. 2.2 billion people worldwide have either no clean drinking water at all or not enough. Thus, ways to save water must be developed, especially in the industrial sector. The average freshwater consumption to produce a kilogram of paper with Voith machines is currently between 0 and 25 liters, depending on the paper grade and the location of the paper mill.
Voith's vision is to reduce the freshwater consumption for all paper grades towards zero. Gradual conversion to the use of purified and filtered circulation water is the key to significantly reducing water consumption in paper manufacturing.

Save fiber with our products
Worldwide paper production is approximately 440 million metric tons. About 200 million tons of wood pulp are consumed annually in paper production. A growing percentage of it is recycled. Around 50% of global paper production already relies on recycled paper, and the portion will continue to increase.
Voith has developed effective solutions for using and recycling the valuable starting product of primary fiber even more efficiently. Thus, all paper grades can be produced with an ever-larger portion of recycled fibers, without loss of quality. Our goal is to maximize the rate of recycling through new technologies worldwide. The intelligent combination of recycled and primary fibers will allow the growing demand for paper to be met in a resource-conserving and cost-saving way in the future.

Save energy with our products
The paper industry is an energy-intensive industry. Nearly 20% of the total cost of paper manufacturing is energy. For example, power consumption in the packaging paper industry is 250 to 400 kWh for a metric ton of paper (without stock preparation process).
Voith has developed systems and products for all paper grades that effectively save energy along the entire process chain, but also recover it and generate it from renewable sources. Voith’s goal is to cut energy consumption for paper manufacturing in half. This becomes possible both through the use of innovative technologies and the reduction of resource consumption. By increasing the portion of recovered paper, noticeably less power is needed.
